You find out how good your travel insurance is when you make a claim
I recently returned to Australia after being hospitalised in Ciwec Hospital Kathmandu Nepal (Ciwec) for three weeks following a trekking mishap. I required emergency surgery for a perforated bowel and a staph infection prolonged my hospital stay.
NIB Travel Insurance worked closely with Ciwec to ensure I received first class hospital and medical attention.
Understandably there were holdups with correspondence and information sharing given the remote location, time difference as well as telephone issues ( I did not have a local Nepal sim card so I was relying on wi-fi which at times was not satisfactory, which was not NIB fault).
Nonetheless, NIB was fully supportive of the decisions and health care that was provided by Ciwec Doctors, Nurses and Surgeon and I had no problems at all with NIB covering all costs at Ciwec - it cost me A$250 excess for emergency surgery, three days in ICU and 18 days in General Ward. NIB also upgraded by air flight home from Kathmandu to Brisbane together with assistance at Kathmandu and Singapore airports.
My sincere thanks to NIB for their extraordinary service, assistance and care for the time I was admitted at Ciwec until when I arrived home safely in Brisbane. A special thank you to the Emergency Assistance Team especially Tina and Joanne.
