Computer default caused Operation delay
I wanted to cut costs on Health Insurance so got a quote at BUPA. I joined the TOP cover and then cancelled my previous fund membership where we were on Hospital MID PLUS. My Husband was going into hospital for a complete hip replacement a few days later. The hospital called us the day before to say that BUPA had informed them that we were not covered for this procedure. Top cover includes hip replacement and we had already waited our 12mth period with my former health insurance policy under the MID PLUS which was also covered for hip replacement. I was told that it would be a seamless transition from one fund to the other. I phoned BUPA to see what the problem was as to why they would not cover this procedure. A customer service person said 'sorry because we were on mid range with the other fund they had put us on a similar rate of cover.' He told me to go back to my previous fund which I did at a cost of $490 to re join again! After more phone calls to BUPA they said the computer saw it as MID Hospital as a default in their system. We actually were covered with TOP hospital but a computer error saw it as Mid cover. They need to make sure this does not happen to anyone else by upgrading their computer systems!
